Christmas is a time for joy and celebration, but that doesn’t mean you can afford to be lax when it comes to keeping your home safe. With many more valuables in the house and more frequent trips away from home to see family and friends, it can be the perfect time for a would-be intruder to take advantage of the festivities.

As such, we’ve put together a helpful list of reminders to ensure your presents stay under the tree, and most importantly – you and your family stay safe.

Ensure you always lock up.

Although this one’s a fairly obvious point – it’s no less important! Even if you’re only popping next door to see family or if you’re going to be in the house alone, it’s important to ensure your front door and any accessible windows are securely locked.

Use your alarm!

If you have a security system involved – use it! Even if it’s simply an auditory alert, a loud alarm is often enough to deter an intruder – especially in a busy area.

Keep them hidden.

Although keeping your presents under the tree is a huge part of the festive feeling, if your Christmas Tree is easily visible from outside, it might not be the best idea. Like valuables in your car, if you keep them out of sight, they become out of mind.

Leave (some) lights on.

If you’re heading out to see family and friends, it’s not a bad idea to leave a light on or two, to give the impression that somebody’s home. An intruder is far less likely to enter a property if they think someone is around. Just make sure you’re using eco-friendly bulbs!
